What is a S type load cell (aka S-beam load cell)?
An S type load cell is a versatile force measurement device featuring an S-shaped elastic element designed to measure loads in both directions. Also known as an S-beam or Z-beam load cell, it is widely used when accurate tensile and compressive force measurement is required. The compact structure and flexible mounting arrangement make this type of sensor suitable for weighing systems, material testing equipment, industrial machinery, and other applications where bidirectional force measurement is needed.
The sensing element may be manufactured from aluminum, alloy steel, or stainless steel to meet different requirements for capacity, durability, and environmental resistance. Under an applied load, the elastic element undergoes a controlled deformation. Strain gauges bonded to the central beam detect this deformation and convert it into a proportional electrical signal through a full Wheatstone bridge. The resulting mV/V output can be connected to a weighing indicator, signal amplifier, PLC, or data acquisition system for accurate load monitoring.
A distinctive feature of the S shaped load cell is the threaded mounting hole at each end. Accessories such as load buttons, rod ends, eye bolts, hooks, and other mechanical fittings can be attached according to the installation requirements. This configuration provides flexibility for suspended weighing and inline force measurement while simplifying mechanical integration. Typical applications include tank and hopper weighing, tensile strength and fatigue testing, structural testing, overload protection, and industrial process control.
As a compression and tension load cell, the S-beam configuration can detect both push and pull forces within its rated capacity. It can also serve as a push pull force sensor in testing and automation systems where force direction may change during operation. LCS offers S-type load sensors from 100 g to 20 ton (1 N to 200 kN), with accuracy up to 0.02% of rated capacity, IP68 protection, and threaded sizes from M2 to M36. Customized designs are available for special capacities, dimensions, materials, mounting configurations, and OEM force measurement applications.
